Filling Liquid Pharmaceutical Products with Peristaltic Pumps
Peristaltic Pumps (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peristaltic_pump) are an excellent choice when the prevention of product contamination is critical. Many medical devices use peristaltic pumps for this very reason. The project we are completing this week also requires that we fill the product in very small range volumes, from 0.25 ml up to 60 ml. On the smallest fill, we're in what is called the "dosification" range. Peristaltic pumps are a good choice for dosification of small amounts of product.
The product is drawn out of the customer's product supply vessel through small diameter tubing which is drawn through a cam on the pump. As the cams on each pump turn, peristalsis occurs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peristalsis). It is interesting to note that peristaltic action is what earthworms utilize to move!
The benefits of our Peristaltic Pump Filler for our customer, then, are as follows:
- After every "lot" of product which is completed, the peristaltic pump tubing can be discarded, making cleanup and sanitization of the filling machine very, very fast and easy.
- Because we are using very small diameter peristaltic pump tubing, we are able to keep very tight tolerances with the filled volumes of each vial or container.
