LPS Cappers by Closure Type

While different filling machines might be used for the same or similar products when preparing them for the shelf, capping machines are manufactured specifically for the type of closure being used for a given project. For example, a continuous thread - or screw-on - type cap will not be tightened with a bottle corker or an ROPP capper. The type of closure used in any project will determine which type of capping machine will be used when the process is automated.

Screw-On Closures

Continuous thread closures can take on many different forms, from standard flat caps found on bottled water and soft drinks to flip top caps, pump closures, trigger sprayers and more. Regardless of the form, these caps are all tightened by screwing them on to the threads found on the bottles or other containers. Both spindle cappers and chuck cappers can be used to tighten these type of closures.

Spindle cappers are more popular on automatic packaging lines, with bottles and caps running continuously down a conveyor belt while being tightened by sets of spinning disks in the capping area. The continuous capping can add slightly more speed than an automatic chuck capping machine, though some projects, such as small containers or vials, will be better served by the chuck capper.

Chuck capping machines use a chuck to descend over the cap and apply torque to tighten the screw-on type closure. These machines are more popular among those using semi-automatic equipment, including a handheld chuck capper that allows for capping in a small space. Both machines are available in automatic and semi-automatic versions, with automatic versions including cap delivery and semi-automatic requiring more operator interaction in placing the cap and the bottle for the sealing process. The correct choice for continuous thread caps will depend on a number of different factors unique to each project.

Snap-On Closures

Snap-on closures are simply pressed down to snap into place. The automatic snap capper will be manufactured similar to the spindle capping machine, but using a belt or tamper to snap caps into place. For contract packagers or those using both continuous thread and snap caps, the two machines can be combined on one frame to allow for more versatility in the capping process, while also saving space. Snap cappers are also available in both automatic and semi-automatic models, with operators needed for each bottle and cap on semi-automatic models.

ROPP Closures

ROPP closures are used to seal bottles using rollers or knives that create threads on the bottle at the time of capping. Aluminum blanks are often used to provide a reliable seal along with tamper evidence on products such as distilled spirits, wine, olive oil and more. Like other cappers, the ROPP capper can be built as a semi-automatic or automatic machine, again with the difference in the interaction required by the operator with each bottle being sealed.

Corks and Cork-like Closures

Automatic bottle corking machines will place and seal corks, T-corks and other similar closures for a range of products. Semi-automatic corking machines require the operator to either place the cork or load a chute with corks, and placing the bottle and cork in position to be sealed. Corking machines are also popular in the distilled spirits industry and are often combined with neck banders or capsule spinners to create a tamper evident seal.

Other Closure Types

Sealing equipment for other types of closures, such as clamshells, can also typically be manufactured based on the needs of the individual packager. Custom capping machines can be manufactured based on the closure, the production speed, the containers, budget, space and many other factors.
